Experience at the Fest: MECCA

Mecca is not just a fest rather it is the celebration of the feelings of every Hinduite. It is that time of the year when the whole college works together as a team to organize this Mega Event. A team of individuals that is capable enough to bring out such a big fest stands there on the last day of Mecca smiling to their hearts' content because it is they who bear it like a child. The grandeur of Mecca is way too high for a college fest and this is the reality. It is a fest which has a footfall of nearly 50,000+ people, in the Sports Complex of Hindu College. Duos like Kings of Chartbusters, Vishal-Shekhar and Merchants of Sufi music, Salim-Sulaiman when performing live makes everybody groove. Mecca's stage has witnessed footprints of mega stars like Mohit Chauhan, Rekha Bharadwaj, Papon and the list goes on. With every face smiling, with every leg shaking, with every hand in the air, one can see the efforts of the organizers bear fruit.

As a first-year student, I looked forward to the part of the year when all the preparations would begin but I also had this doubt in my mind that Would Mecca be happening this year or not. And I tell you that this was the thought of every single student, irrespective of the batches because Covid had already led to the cancellation of every big event since the past three years. During the initial days of my college, even I heard it from my seniors that there was no chance of Mecca happening in 2023 not because of Covid but due to the lack of prep-time. Everyone was disappointed but then one day, an invitation to a WhatsApp group named 'Mecca toh Hoga' came to us. I joined the group but had very less hopes because of the fact that it would be nearly impossible to organize such a big event in less than two months.

My belief in the happening of Mecca got stronger when the principal signed up for the organizing committee of Mecca, which constituted of various Presidents of Departments and College Societies and other third year students. Not just the organizing committee but a huge number of first- and second-year students also volunteered for the same. All the volunteers put their efforts to the fullest in bringing the sponsorships, food stalls, and most importantly, the main celebrity for the star night. Various phenomenal events were organized for the students from all over Delhi to participate. Apart from the ups, there were some downs also. In Delhi University, we call them protests. Students sat outside the principal office demanding for the conduct of Mecca for three days. Sadly, the administration won but I was happy that at least Mecca was happening and Sunidhi Chauhan was cominggggggggg!!!!!!!!!

As soon as the registrations were out for Mecca, I remember my friends from other colleges as well as my pgmates kept on asking about their entry in Mecca. All the girls kept on talking about what they were going to wear on both the days. The day finally came, and it actually felt like we are having a big fat Indian wedding for which we have been preparing for the last one and a half month. There were numerous food and game stalls that occupied the back alley, next to our Sports Complex. Solo and Group dance competitions were being held in the main auditorium. There was a huge crowd waiting outside the auditorium to enter but it was full. Even we had to sit on the stairs in the balcony of our auditorium. I will have to say that all the participants gave a fantabulous and energetic performance that made the crowd go crazy. The Battle of Bands was being held on the main stage in the ground and by the end of the battle and the first day of Mecca, there were cool winds blowing which lifted up everyone's moods.

On the second day, there was a massive crowd in the college campus, a crowd that I had never seen before. There was no place to walk also. Every single person was eagerly waiting for Sunidhi's performance. We hinduites as well as the girls from other colleges were lucky enough because we were supposed to occupy the front area ahead of the barricades.

And what do I tell you about Sunidhi's grand performance. I mean my words will not be able to do justice to what we actually experienced that evening. I will have to say that Sunidhi indeed is one of the best singers and performers of our country. I experienced this whole concert thing for the very first time in life and boy I will remember it forever. Listening and my grooving to the OG songs that I have grown up listening to was delightful. You would understand better when you yourself see the clips from the day.
